Emergency Action Plan

This campus has a written emergency action plan that will be followed in the event of a medical emergency. All administrators on duty should be familiar with this document and their role and responsibility in an emergency. Any questions should be directed to the administrator on duty.

When an emergency arises, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) shall be contacted to give further medical attention and/or transport a student/individual to the hospital. In these situations, coordination between the administrators, coaches, nurses, etc. is important. This guide is intended to delineate roles and outline the protocol to follow in an emergency.

Situations, when 911 should be called, are:

an individual is having difficulty breathing or is not breathing
an individual has lost consciousness
a seizure lasting more than 5 minutes
it is suspected that an individual may have a neck or back injury
an individual has an open fracture (bone has punctured through the skin)
severe heat exhaustion or suspected heat stroke
severe bleeding that cannot be stopped

Emergency Communication

Assigned campus administrators on duty are to have cell phones on the person as well as a two-way radio for local communication. Landlines are located throughout the campus.

The highest person in the chain of command who is present at a scene will be the designated person in charge or leader. That person is responsible for instructing others how they may be of help and will be the person who stays with the individual until EMS arrives. The first responder or person in charge is responsible for documenting actions taken during the emergency response. This information will be used to evaluate the emergency response and will be used in the after-event review meeting and maintained by the campus administration team.

Once it has been decided that EMS should be called, the following protocol should be followed:

EMERGENCY PROTOCOL AND ROLES

Activation of Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
- The highest person in command can designate another person (administrator, parent or student) to call 9-1-1.
- Cell phone is preferable, but if calling from the school phone, dials 9-1-1.
- Provide your name, location, telephone number, number of individuals injured, nature of the injury, treatment provided already, specific directions to the location, and other information as requested.
- Also, tell EMS that someone will meet them at the closest intersection to aid in directing the ambulance. DO NOT HANG UP UNTIL EMS HANGS UP FIRST.
- The leader will send runners to all intersections between where the individual is located and where EMS would enter to direct the ambulance to the individual. The runners should stay in their positions and wave the ambulance through the proper turns to get to the individual.
- The highest person in command will designate another person to attempt contact with the individual’s parents or emergency contact.
- When transport is necessary by EMS, the individual will be taken to the nearest medical center unless they request otherwise.
- The person in command will ensure a campus administrator will travel with the student if their parent or guardian is unavailable.

CONTINGENCY PLAN FOR EMERGENCY AIR LIFTED SERVICES

In the event of a catastrophic event requiring the assistance of emergency airlift services/Life Flight, the following plan will be implemented.

The administrator on duty will coordinate with dispatch to provide the primary and secondary landing zones designated in the campus emergency response plan
A designated person within the chain of command will unlock designated areas to be used by fire and EMS personnel if necessary.
Personnel will be standing by to direct EMS back to the appropriate location after landing.
