Alumni Spotlight: Bruce Hillegeist

BRUCE HILLEGEIST
Tomball High School, Class of 1978
President of the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce

To Bruce Hillegeist, Tomball is more than just home.

“We have a sense of identity and community spirit here in Tomball,” Hillegeist said.”

Born in Tomball Community Hospital to Arleah Bruce Hillegeist and the late Roy Hillegeist, Bruce is a fifth generation Texan and a lifetime resident of the Rose Hill and Tomball communities.

He is an alumnus of Tomball Lutheran School (’74), Tomball High School (’78) and Sam Houston State University (’82) and is a graduate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organization Management, as well as Leadership North Houston.

In Tomball, Bruce Hillegeist is more than just a resident.

Hillegeist, a former banker, currently serves as the President of the Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce and has been in this role since 1994. He is a supporter of many other civic and charity organizations in the Greater Tomball area which include the Tomball Police Department Citizen's Police Academy, Tomball Hospital Association, Tomball Regional Medical Center Board of Directors, and Tomball Pregnancy Center Board of Directors, among others.

“When I came home from college, I was in banking and right away, I started to get involved with the Tomball community,” Hillegeist recalls. “After a couple of years in banking, I became the Marketing Director. The President of the bank encouraged me to visit the Chamber and get involved and that is how I fell in love with the Chamber. Having volunteered and now in the job full-time, it really has helped me build relationships. I love sharing what goes on behind the scenes with others. I have a love for service and servant leadership is very important to me.”

A true representative of the community and more specifically Tomball ISD, Hillegeist is a 1978 graduate of Tomball High School and is a member of the Tomball FFA Booster Club, the Tomball Education Foundation, and the Tomball Scholarship Foundation.

“Tomball ISD has always, in my memories as a child, driven the community spirit though its academics, arts and athletics,” he said.

“The school district has pride. We share a love of learning through our loving and caring staff on each campus,” Hillegeist said. “The premium academics along with the facilities is second to none. I am and will always be a proud alumnus that wants to give back.”

From the small country town outside the city of Houston, Hillegeist has seen Tomball grow and expand, yet maintain a small-town feel that every resident cherishes.

“We have always had the slogan, “Tomball, Hometown with a Heart.” Whether it’s a Chamber or school event or a city function or a charity, everything is family-friendly. We are about relationships and making people happy,” Hillegeist said.

His representation was statewide as Hillegeist served as the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Chairman in 2010.

His roots are thick and there is no better representative for this community than one of Tomball’s own.

“It is neat to have roots here. My mom was a teacher and my dad was a banker,” Hillegeist said. “I remember when Main St. was a two-lane road and remember when Tomball was a long drive away from the city, but now we are a part of the city. You really don’t know when Houston starts and ends. To see people you know, go into stores, drive Main St., the police know who you are, it is a great thing to have those relationships.”

Hillegeist has continued to share his love for this community through civic duties and a passion for giving back. He represents what Tomball is all about. He brings life and a passionate spirit to everything he does in the community and residents attract to his admiration for the place he, and many others, call home.

“People here in Tomball are good people,” Hillegeist said. “We understand Tomball is growing and changing and we welcome new folks and new ideas. We are a very welcoming community that supports education and our schools and we want you to feel a part of it each and every day.”

And to new residents and businesses joining the community, Hillegeist makes it known that “Tomball ISD is the best investment you can make when bringing a new business to the community or moving your family to Tomball.”
