School Counseling

Mission

TISD School Counselors deliver a comprehensive school counseling program that supports the academic, postsecondary, and social/emotional development of all students to ensure their success in school and beyond.

Vision

Tomball ISD counselors empower all students to become compassionate leaders, resilient problem-solvers, and independent lifelong learners.
Tomball ISD school counselor serve all students through the implementation of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Program. Per the Texas Model, this is accomplished through four primary delivery systems which are summarized below.

Guidance Curriculum

The guidance curriculum focuses on providing all students with structured lessons and activities to develop essential skills in academic, career, and personal/social domains. These lessons are integrated into the regular school curriculum and are delivered by school counselors in collaboration with teachers. The curriculum aims to address the developmental needs of students and promote positive growth and achievement.

Responsive Services

Responsive services involve addressing the immediate and specific needs of students. School counselors provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and support services to help students overcome personal, social, or academic challenges. They also collaborate with other school staff, parents, and community resources to ensure students receive the necessary support and referrals to TISD and community wraparound services when needed.

Individual Planning

The individual planning system focuses on assisting students in developing and managing their educational and career goals. School counselors work with students to identify their strengths, interests, and aspirations, and help them create Personal Graduation Plans (PGP) to achieve their academic and career objectives. They provide guidance on course selection, college and career exploration, and assist students in navigating the transition from school to post-secondary education or employment.

System Support

The system support component involves the collaboration, coordination, and advocacy efforts that school counselors engage in to promote an effective school counseling program. School counselors work with administrators, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to establish and maintain a comprehensive and equitable counseling program. They engage in professional development activities, collect and analyze data to evaluate program effectiveness, and advocate for the needs of students within the school community.

We believe…

  • All students have dignity and worth.
  • The primary role of the school counselor is to be an advocate for students and work toward the common goals of equity, access, and the academic success for every student.
  • Counselors build a sense of community within the school, which serves as a platform from which to advocate for every student.
  • Each child is unique and requires professionals to consider their individual unique strengths and weaknesses when considering intervention strategies to support them.
  • The whole child must be considered when designing effective educational programs and/or interventions.
  • Children are affected throughout their education by emotional and social issues that can be addressed through individual, small group, or whole class counseling sessions.
  • Through peer mediation and conflict resolution children can learn to better cope with their peers.
  • Parental involvement in a child’s education is critical and must be nurtured.
  • A quality educational program for a child is a collaborative effort between many people inside and outside the school system.
  • The counselor is a valuable resource and support for students, parents, and educators in helping to provide an optimum educational program for each child.
  • Career awareness and counseling provides a connection for students between their current academic program and their future after school.
  • Decisions affecting the counseling program must be data driven.
