Friends of the Children Houston

Friends of the Children Houston provides long-term, professional mentoring for at risk students at no cost to
families or the district.

Friends of the Children Houston provides long-term, professional mentoring for students facing significant barriers, at no cost to families or the district. Students are typically referred by their school counselor between the ages of 4 and 7 and are paired with a full-time, salaried professional mentor—a “Friend”—who provides consistent support through high school graduation.

Friends spend intentional, goal-directed time with students at school, at home, and in the community, focusing on academic success, social-emotional development, life skills, and each student’s individual strengths and goals. The program also partners with families through special activities, family engagement opportunities, and educational sessions for parents and caregivers.

What makes Friends of the Children especially unique is its long-term commitment: students have a trusted adult walking alongside them for years, providing stability, encouragement, advocacy, and connection as they grow.
