Library Materials Acquisition
In compliance with state law, Tomball ISD will post all recommended library materials, including those donated or proposed for purchase, on the Library Services webpage for at least 30 days prior to board approval. This review period gives staff, students, parents, and community members the opportunity to view the materials and submit comments using the District’s form linked on the webpage. All feedback submitted during the 30-day period will be reviewed and considered before any purchases are finalized or approved by the board.
Tomball ISD follows state law and district policy to ensure library materials are carefully selected to support student learning, reflect community values, and provide a wide range of perspectives. All selections are made by trained librarians and professional staff using established collection development standards.
When selecting books and resources, the district ensures they:
- Support the TEKS and curriculum while meeting the needs and interests of all students.
- Present multiple viewpoints and reflect diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Provide accurate, high-quality content from trusted sources with strong student appeal.
- Encourage reading, critical thinking, and informed decision-making.
Selections may be based on:
- Recommendations from students, parents, teachers, and community members.
- Professional reviews, award lists, and expert recommendations.
- Consultation with district teachers, library staff, and other professionals.
- How well the material fills gaps and balances the existing collection.
This process ensures that Tomball ISD libraries provide resources that are developmentally appropriate, academically supportive, and reflective of the diverse needs of our students.
