TMHS Student Valerie Barrero Chosen as Youth Ambassador for the World Literacy Foundation
TOMBALL - While summer is in full swing for Tomball ISD students, Tomball Memorial High School rising junior Valerie Barrero is preparing to join the nation’s top youth as a Youth Ambassador for the World Literacy Foundation, a global non-profit organization striving to ensure that every child, regardless of geographic location, has the opportunity to acquire literacy skills and books to reach their full potential – succeeding at school and beyond.
As a Youth Ambassador, Barrero will join a global community of change-makers to become literacy promoters in their communities and countries for many years. She will be an ambassador in the Tomball community, raising awareness and advocating for literacy. She will help raise funds for literacy programs, and she will serve as a positive role model to younger children in the area.
“I was compelled to become a Youth Ambassador because I love literature and love reading,” Barrero said. “For someone who is very connected to books and loves reading, I look forward to sharing that with others who may not be as privileged or have opportunities like I have growing up. I hope to inspire others to pick up a book and I hope to grow personally throughout this new opportunity.”
Barrero currently is a student leader on her campus at TMHS, serving as a junior class officer, treasurer for USITT (theatre), is a member of the Literary Criticism Team and Writing Club, and has plans to start a Book Club on campus. Barrero also is an AP Capstone student, taking AP Research this coming year and will serve as a future AP Capstone Mentor on campus.
