TOMBALL -  In a world where successful high school student-athletes often balance intense training schedules with rigorous academics, Tomball Memorial High School senior Andrew Nsiah has not only excelled in both but has also left a lasting impact on his community.

A standout student, Nsiah was recently honored with a KPRC 2 Senior Scholarship, sponsored by American Furniture Warehouse, valued at $2,500, recognizing his dedication to academics, athletics, and his efforts to inspire the next generation of young students in the STEM field of computer science.

KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse representatives recently joined Tomball ISD Superintendent Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora, TMHS Administration, staff and students to celebrate Nsiah’s scholarship recognition on campus, which later aired during a weekly newscast.

“Being a KPRC scholarship winner means more than words can amount,” Nsiah said. “While on the outside, many can mistake the opportunity as just a financial award to support my college career, it represents so much more. This scholarship provides me with the ability to showcase to kids who look just like myself that we are capable of creating change where it is called for, and I wouldn’t trade that for the world.”

Nsiah shares an admiration for his school and acknowledges the opportunities that he has been afforded, but doesn’t underestimate his ability to still make an impact.

“One of the best parts about attending TMHS is not only its commitment to diversity and innovative thinking but also its commitment to keeping students involved and excited about coming to school and learning,” he said.

As a team captain on the varsity football team, Nsiah also shares his time as a member of the National Honor Society and playing volleyball. He shares a passion for STEM-related activities, and enjoys coding and computer science after growing up with his dad holding a career as an IT Specialist.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been surrounded by computers,” he said. “It wasn’t until I was given a project in one of my elective classes where we were asked what profession we wanted to have when I finally decided on electrical engineering. However, after deeper research, I found that the field of STEM lacked representation for people like myself.”

From there, Nsiah felt a need to make a difference. He began a non-profit organization that focused on educating and teaching younger students about coding and the fundamentals of computer science.

“As I grew my skills, I grew my outreach,” he noted. “Teaching over 30 kids the principles of computer science using free resources online, I have devoted myself to not only making computer engineering affordable but also accessible to those who may not be able to attain it themselves.”

Nsiah will graduate in May 2025 with plans to enroll at the University of Texas at Austin where he will major in Electrical and Computer Engineering.

“With opportunities offered through my advanced placement of computer sciences, I aspire to utilize Electrical and Computer Engineering to help bridge the gap between computer engineering and healthcare to ensure that healthcare systems continue to become more efficient and predictive,” Nsiah said.

Every opportunity Nsiah has been given, he has made the most of it. His passion for innovation coupled with being a change-maker on his TMHS campus is a testament to his hard work and dedication as a student in Tomball ISD.
