Tomball ISD's Cristina Monroe Named Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year Finalist

TOMBALL — Tomball ISD proudly announces that Cristina Monroe, a biology teacher at Tomball Star Academy, has been named one of just five finalists for the 2027 Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year.

With 15 years in education, including the past 10 years serving Tomball ISD, Monroe has dedicated her career to inspiring students through engaging, student-centered instruction while fostering curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.

Selected from educators representing the 46 school districts served by Region 4 Education Service Center, Monroe is one of only 10 overall finalists—five elementary and five secondary—recognized for exceptional teaching, leadership, and dedication to student success.

Why education? What makes your job so special?
"Education is never boring.  The impact of a teacher cannot be measured.  I feel a sense of purpose waking up every day and going to work.  Some people say it is a thankless job and that we don't see results until years later, and truthfully, I can see why they say that because it certainly feels that way sometimes.  But when I stop to think about it, I get to see my students grow every day.  We celebrate every step and small win as we go.  I get to be a part of their journey, and that in itself is the most rewarding and special part of my job."

Why Tomball ISD? 
"My husband, David Monroe, a computer science teacher at Tomball Memorial, actually got the job first.  At the time, we lived in Katy, and he was commuting to Tomball Memorial.  At the end of that year when it was time to decide where we would settle down, there was no question that it was Tomball.  Tomball ISD is the first time I heard people say, "I love my job," and I couldn't agree more.  I began to say it more frequently because it wasn't just about what I did on a daily basis but who I did it with.  I have always said that Tomball ISD has the highest concentration of teachers that SHOW UP for the students that truly care about doing a good job.  It feels good to work alongside so many other dedicated staff, and it inspires me to keep doing what's best for kids.  Furthermore, it is where I trust my own children will receive a quality education, where people care about developing them as a whole and not just academically."

What does it mean to be named Tomball ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year? 
"It actually is extremely validating.  It means that I am doing what I am supposed to be doing.  It means I have impacted my students, colleagues, and community in the positive way I had hoped.  I can't imagine doing anything else, and I am genuinely honored and humbled by Tomball ISD's recognition of my efforts.  To be recognized by Tomball ISD, the only A rated district in Harris and Montgomery counties, makes me feel extremely grateful and proud to receive this prestigious award."

The Region 4 Teacher of the Year program honors educators who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, cultivate meaningful relationships with students, and make lasting contributions to their campuses and communities. Monroe's recognition reflects her commitment to academic excellence and her belief that every student has the potential to succeed.

The 2027 Region 4 Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year will be announced during a special ceremony on Thursday, August 6. The regional winners will advance to represent Region 4 in the Texas Teacher of the Year program, recognizing the state's top elementary and secondary educators.
