Tomball ISD Educator Cristina Monroe Named 2027 Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year

TOMBALL — Tomball ISD is proud to announce that Cristina Monroe, biology teacher at Tomball Star Academy, has been named the 2027 Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year, one of the highest honors bestowed upon Texas educators. Monroe was recognized during the 2027 Region 4 Teacher of the Year Ceremony on Aug. 6, where the region's top educators were celebrated for their exceptional commitment to students, instructional excellence and leadership.

Monroe becomes the first-ever Tomball ISD teacher to be named a Region 4 winner. She earned the finalist recognition back in July, and among the five secondary finalists, was selected, representing school districts across the Region 4 service area. As the winner, she will now advance as the Region 4 representative in the Texas Teacher of the Year program.

With 15 years in education, including the past 10 years in Tomball ISD, Monroe has built a reputation for inspiring students both inside and outside the classroom. As a biology teacher at Tomball Star Academy, she believes education is about far more than academics.

"Education is never boring. The impact of a teacher cannot be measured," Monroe said. "I feel a sense of purpose waking up every day and going to work. I get to see my students grow every day. We celebrate every step and every small win along the way. I get to be a part of their journey, and that in itself is the most rewarding and special part of my job."

Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora, Tomball ISD Superintendent of Schools, said Monroe exemplifies the passion and excellence that define the district's educators.

"Cristina represents the very best of Tomball ISD and the incredible educators who make a lasting difference in the lives of students," Salazar-Zamora said. "Her passion for teaching, commitment to student success, and ability to build meaningful relationships create a classroom where every student feels valued and empowered to achieve. Cristina embodies what it means to lead with heart, purpose, and excellence, and we are incredibly proud to see her recognized as the 2027 Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year."

Monroe said choosing Tomball ISD was one of the best decisions her family has ever made. After her husband, David Monroe, accepted a teaching position at Tomball Memorial High School, the couple decided to make Tomball their home.

"Tomball ISD is the first place I heard people say, 'I love my job,' and I couldn't agree more," Monroe said. "It isn't just about what I do every day—it's who I get to do it with. Tomball ISD has the highest concentration of teachers who truly show up for students and care deeply about doing what's best for kids. Working alongside so many dedicated educators inspires me every day. It's also where I trust my own children to receive an outstanding education."

Tomball Star Academy Principal Dr. Victoria Brinkman said Monroe's influence extends well beyond the science classroom.

"Mrs. Monroe is a phenomenal teacher and one of the most reflective educators I have ever encountered," Brinkman said. "She truly believes every student can learn and works tirelessly to ensure students not only understand the material but also feel valued and supported as individuals. While Biology is her content area, students are truly her passion. Through the relationships she builds and the many organizations she sponsors, Mrs. Monroe changes lives. She is one of the very best educators—and one of the very best humans—we are incredibly proud to have her represent Tomball Star Academy, Tomball ISD and now Region 4."

Monroe was previously named the 2026-2027 Tomball ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. She joined Tomball ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year from West Elementary, Samantha Stratton, at this year’s event - earning the opportunity to represent the district at the regional level. 

The Region 4 Teacher of the Year program recognizes educators who exemplify instructional excellence, leadership and a lasting impact on student success. Region 4 Education Service Center serves 49 public school districts and charter schools throughout the Greater Houston area.
