Tomball High School Teacher Recognized with Prestigious 2026 Yale Educator Award

Tomball High School Teacher Recognized with Prestigious 2026 Yale Educator Award
Travis Ferrell - Yale Educator Award

Congratulations to Tomball High School teacher Travis Ferrell on earning the Yale Educator Award recognition from a former student now attending Yale.

TOMBALL — A former student’s nomination has led to a special honor for Tomball High School teacher Travis Ferrell, who has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Yale Educator Award by the Yale Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

The Yale Educator Recognition Program honors outstanding educators who support and inspire students to perform at high levels and achieve excellence. This year, 307 educators from 39 states and 20 countries were nominated, with just 50 teachers and 17 counselors selected to receive the award.

Recipients are nominated by students who are enrolled at Yale, and each nomination is individually reviewed by a committee of Yale admissions officers.

For Ferrell, the recognition is meaningful because it came from one of his former students, Alissa Feng, who is beginning her first year at Yale.

“I’m incredibly proud of Alissa starting her first year at Yale; I am thankful for this wonderful and pleasant surprise,” Ferrell said. “It gives me a renewed sense of motivation that the short time I have with my students creates a lasting impression.”

That lasting impact is at the heart of what Ferrell values most about teaching.

“My absolute favorite part of teaching is receiving messages from former students about concepts they learned in my class that they are now experiencing in the real world,” he said. “I love hearing their success stories and knowing that I played a small role in them.”

Now in his eighth year in education and eighth year at Tomball High School, Ferrell, who teaches Dual Credit Government, said his classroom is designed to be more than a place where students learn course content.

“My goal has always been to make my class a place where students can explore their ideas in a comfortable and fun environment,” he said. “I know long after the students have forgotten their test scores, they will remember the experiences they shared.”

That philosophy is part of what makes the recognition so special for Tomball ISD. The Yale Admissions Office recognizes educators like Ferrell for the important role they play in shaping students long before they arrive on a college campus.

And while Ferrell is being recognized for his own impact, he is quick to credit the educators around him.

“I am surrounded by some of the absolute best teachers in the State of Texas,” Ferrell said. “I have the freedom to model my teaching after different aspects of my colleagues' styles, which helps me form a unique approach of my own. I truly value that freedom.”

The 2026 Yale Educator Award is a celebration not only of Ferrell’s dedication to his students, but of the lasting influence educators can have on the lives and futures of the students they teach.
