TIS Math Teacher Luz Benjamin Awarded Houston Texans Teacher Grant by Chevron
TOMBALL - Tomball Intermediate School 6th grade math teacher Luz Benjamin was awarded this October a Houston Texans Teacher Grant by Chevron for her exceptional teaching and dedication to the classroom.
Benjamin was one of 25 teachers who received a $1,000 grant on behalf of Chevron to use for her classroom. In addition to the grant, she received two tickets for the Chevron suite for the Texans vs. Colts game on October 27.
Benjamin has served education for 18 years, and is currently the lead 6th grade math teacher at TIS. She earned this award through a nomination process.
“Innovative in her approach, Ms. Benjamin crafts lessons that captivate students, utilizing technology like Lumio to enrich their learning experience,” said Dr. Kelly Marchiando, TIS Principal.
She has served on the district curriculum writing team and also presented training at the state math conference on how to teach the order of operations. During her career, she has been recognized as a Master Teacher, Most Valuable Teacher, Campus A+ Teacher of the Year, Superintendent Shining Star, and also a recognition by the Houston Astros and ConocoPhillips as a Math Teacher of the Month last school year.
“She uses a variety of engaging instructional methods to ensure students succeed, including using a classroom model economy where students can earn currency by solving problems and purchase items after they calculate the total using tax and tip percentages,” said David Surdovel, Tomball ISD Director of Math. “Luz Benjamin finds creative ways to make learning math fun and help students perform at high levels of achievement.”
On the Spring 2024 Grade 6 Math STAAR test, the 62 students in her classes scored 98% Approaches, 98% Meets, and 87% Masters Grade Level.
“Ms. Benjamin epitomizes excellence in mathematics teaching, as evidenced by her students achieving outstanding scores on the Spring 2023 6th grade Math STAAR test,” said Marchiando.
Furthermore, Ms. Luz Benjamin goes above and beyond to support our school community, exemplified by her efforts to raise funds for custodians during Christmas and securing Thanksgiving food boxes for families in need.
“Her dedication and impact on our school community make her an exemplary TIS team member,” said Marchiando.
