TOMBALL - Tomball ISD is excited to announce Karina Avila as the next Principal of Canyon Pointe Elementary.

She will replace Erin Johnson who has been named the next Principal of Grand Oaks Elementary following the retirement of current GOES Principal Niesa Glenewinkel.

“Canyon Pointe Elementary has a tradition of excellence and we are excited to have Mrs. Avila join the Canyon Pointe team as Principal to continue the legacy of this amazing school,” said Dr. George Flores, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools. “With Mrs. Avila's leadership experience as a successful campus Principal and her strong knowledge of collaborative practices, Mrs. Avila is a great fit to lead the amazing staff and Canyon Pointe community in their ongoing pursuit of continuous improvement.”

Mrs. Avila joins Tomball ISD directly from Spring Branch ISD where she has served as a campus Principal at Treasure Forest Elementary since 2020. She brings over 17 years of education experience, and has been an administrator for the last nine years.

Prior to becoming a campus Principal, Mrs. Avila started her educational journey as an Elementary Dual Language Teacher in Spring Branch ISD from 2007 to 2015. She was then promoted to Assistant Principal at Pine Shadows Elementary (2015-2018) and then Assistant Director at Westchester Academy for International Studies (2018-2020) also in SBISD.

As Principal in SBISD, Mrs. Avila implemented and led an articulate Professional Learning Community process where collaboration inquiry and teamwork was promoted. She has spearheaded family engagement initiatives that increased attendance and promoted volunteer opportunities on her campus.

What was intriguing about joining Tomball ISD as a campus leader?
“I am honored and humbled at the opportunity to move into the role of Tomball ISD Principal and continue the district journey of excellence. What I love most about joining Tomball ISD is the commitment to innovation, progress and thinking outside the box. There are so many educational opportunities available to students and families in TISD from dual language campuses to Star Academies. It is not one size fits all.”

What is it about education that you love so much?
“As an educator, it is a blessing to see students grow and be part of their childhood and observe how their personalities evolve and mature. I think that schools are the Real Magic Kingdoms where learning, laughter and joy occur every day. We create citizens of the world.”

What can the CPES school community expect from you as their leader?
“The community of Canyon Pointe Elementary can expect that I will be given 200% of this community, so together we can sustain the incredible growth the students have shown. This school has shown on multiple occasions having amazing leaders, knowledgeable teachers and committed staff. The growth this school has shown does not happen by accident. I promise to take care of the staff, parents, and students.”
