Cheer State Title

Over the last few years, Tomball Memorial High School and Tomball High School Cheerleading have created a dynamic culture of success, highlighting their passion for their school and the drive to be the best at what they do.

The UIL State Spirit Championships, held in Fort Worth this January, featured cheerleading squads across the state vying for a State title to bring back to their home campus.

Tomball Memorial High School, led by head coach Sarah Ellison and assistant coaches Jennifer Koster and Rebecca Weverka, competed in 6A-DI for the first-time ever and produced a score of 87.47 in 6A-DI Finals to win the UIL State Spirit Championship title for its respective division. The team entered Finals in third place and rallied in their finals performance to capture the overall title. Since Ellison took over the program in 2021, TMHS has finished in second place, fourth place and now first place at State.

“We are very thrilled and excited for the opportunity to be able to represent TMHS and TISD at the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships,” Ellison said. “As soon as we arrived back home from UIL, we gathered around the drawing board, put all of our goals and ideas together, deconstructed the constructive criticism and feedback, and now we have an even cleaner and better routine. We will be competing against teams from all over the United States, and we are beyond excited to be able to represent Tomball ISD, our school, and our community at the national level.”

Tomball High School, led by head coach Steven Weibel and assistant coaches Jessica Cantrell and Kelli White, notched the program’s highest overall score in recent years with a 90.33, finishing third in 6A-DII to earn a spot at the National competition. Along with their Top 3 finish, THS was also crowned Band Chant Champions for their respective division. Under Weibel, THS has placed in the Top 3 in each of the last three years at State and its score has improved in each of those years.

“We are looking forward to the UCA National High School Cheerleading Competition in Orlando, Florida to be able to compete against the best from across the nation,” Weibel said. “The future is bright for THS Cheer as we are looking forward to our upcoming tryouts after Nationals. Thank you to the community and district for their continued support! GO COOGS!”

TMHS and THS will travel to Orlando, Florida to compete in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Competition, slated for February 10-13, 2023.
