Real World Experience: Technology Offers Summer Internship for Aspiring Technicians
TOMBALL - While most teens are enjoying a summer break, a standout group of Tomball ISD high school students, representing both Tomball High School and Tomball Memorial High School, are hard at work behind the scenes - keeping the District connected and gaining a head start on their future - right alongside the District’s Technology Services team.
These student tech interns are spending their summer learning the ins and outs of educational technology, gaining real-world experience that’s giving them a front row seat to the systems that power an entire school district.
From inventory and Chromebook repair, to computer lab setup, cabling projects, and new campus setup, these students are working side-by-side with experienced technicians, led by TISD Senior Computer Technician Tannia Osorio, learning how to think critically, solve problems in real time, and communicate with staff - all while exploring a career path in the fast-paced world of technology.
The opportunity also allows these students to learn fundamental job skills like customer service, timekeeping, and personal responsibility that will make them desirable to any employer.
“This is a phenomenal opportunity for our students to experience the realities of working in the information technology field and in most cases is their first job,” said Jason Piazza, Tomball ISD Director of Technology. “Members of our team have grown their skills through mentoring the students and providing leadership. Our team’s skill growth will be as impressive as the growth of our students through this experience.”
This summer internship is part of the District’s commitment to work-based learning and preparing students for success after graduation. The plan is to continue the opportunity throughout the school year with students working alongside technicians, and in other areas such as software development and network operations.
“The goal for our student interns is to gain job skills that will benefit them in the future and provide exposure to the plentiful opportunities in technology-related fields,” said Piazza. “I have had the opportunity over the years to see former student technicians use this experience to choose information technology as their career but there are great benefits to students choosing engineering, or other technical fields as well.”
In Tomball ISD, “students will lead in creating the future.” So much of that is true, and through an opportunity like the one Technology Services has created for Tomball ISD students, this is a powerful way to turn classroom learning into meaningful experience.
