Feel Good Story: West Elementary Librarian Bev Schaffer’s Dedication Recognized with Randalls Red Apple Award

Beverliann Schaffer, librarian at West Elementary, was surprised with the Randalls Red Apple Award during a special presentation in the school library. Schaffer was featured on Great Day Houston’s coverage of the celebration and honor, broadcast by KHOU, highlighting her dedication and impact on students and the school community.

Students and staff gathered for what began as a normal library day before cameras rolled and the surprise revelation took place. As her name was called, applause erupted across the library.

“The library is the heart of the school, and being able to be in the library, I get to teach every student in the school,” Schaffer said. “As the librarian, I get to make learning fun. So they come to the library and I want learning to be fun.”

Schaffer was presented with a certificate, the Red Apple award, and a $350 Randalls gift card to be used for items in the library.

Students shared their appreciation for Schaffer’s influence. “I really like reading and she really makes it fun.”

West Elementary Principal Chad Schmidt also emphasized Schaffer’s strong relationships with students and teachers on campus. “She goes above and beyond [for the students]. She'll reach out to teachers specifically about where they are in their lessons and how she can help reinforce that.”

Ms. Schaffer not only gets her students  involved, but she gets the parents involved as well by creating opportunities for them to take part in their kids' education besides just helping with homework.

“She has incredible volunteers and she's our coordinator for volunteers and really brings the community together,” Schmidt said. “She's an incredible face and voice and heart, not only for our school, but our community.”

During the presentation, a Randalls representative spoke directly to Schaffer, saying, “We can tell that you're having such a positive impact on all the students in the school here in the center, the heart of the school, and so we want to present you with the Randall's Red Apple Award. Congratulations. Thank you so much for the impact you're making.”

The Randalls Red Apple Award celebrates educators in the Greater Houston area who go above and beyond in their service to students and schools. Schaffer’s recognition on Great Day Houston underscores her commitment to fostering a welcoming and inspiring environment for young readers.
