Tomball ISD Orientation & Mobility Specialists Lead White Cane Safety Day
Tomball ISD Special Services once again continues to maximize opportunities to support the incredible students they serve. Recently, the Orientation & Mobility Specialists took the opportunity of White Cane Safety Day to help bring awareness to the importance of the use of a cane.
The National Federation of the Blind celebrates White Cane Awareness Day every year on October 15.
“Individuals with low vision and blindness face many obstacles that they have to overcome within education, as well as with everyday activities,” the team stated.
This day not only brought awareness, but brought independence to the Tomball ISD students when traveling within the school and the community. White Cane pins were made by Orientation & Mobility Specialists Debi Long and Andrea Ward, and were distributed to staff across the District. The students had the opportunity to explain what White Cane Safety Day meant, and several campuses contributed to the awareness by promoting activities and sharing information on campus throughout the day.
Staff and students across the District also dressed up as White Canes to promote the day as well. While this day was all about awareness and promoting the success of the Tomball ISD students, it was also established to encourage the community to be aware of the hard work these individuals have put into understanding the importance of cane use and the skills to use it effectively as the cane is used to assist with their ability to be independent and safe.
