Lakewood Elementary Nurse Honored by Houston Chronicle’s Salute to Nurses

Suzanne Hernandez - Nurse LES

In recognition of National Nurses Week and School Nurses Day on Wednesday, May 8, we’d like to honor our school nurses for their dedication and care to the students, staff, and families of Tomball ISD.

Suzanne Hernandez, RN, was nominated as part of Houston Chronicle’s Salute to Nurses.

Ms. Hernandez has dedicated 12 years to being a school nurse in Tomball ISD, all at Lakewood Elementary. Prior to becoming a full-time school nurse in 2010, she worked as a substitute nurse for Tomball ISD.

She began her nursing career working in critical care/ICU, telemetry, cardiac, endoscopy, nursing management, and family practice for 15 years. After the birth of her second child, she decided to stay home 10 years to raise her two boys. Her sons, who are now 24 and 27 years old, attended Canyon Pointe Elementary, Northpointe Intermediate, Willow Wood Junior High and Tomball Memorial High School.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lamar University in 1985.

Why did you become a school nurse?
“Originally, I became a school nurse so my work schedule was compatible with my boys' academic schedules. I quickly learned that I truly value being part of a team that works together for the benefit of the students.”

What do you love about your job and why Tomball ISD?
“We really care about our students in Tomball ISD. Positive interpersonal relationships with the students, teachers and parents are an important part of my job. I love what I do and the autonomy that it provides. For me, being a school nurse for young students is like merging a nurse, a “school mom” and a teacher into one job.”

As part of the Salute Nurses Spotlight, Ms. Hernandez was a Top 10 School Nurse recognized across school districts in the Greater Houston area. She was recently spotlighted during a celebratory banquet in conjunction with the Houston Chronicle’s annual Salute to Nurses event.

“Nurse Suzanne gives each student her undivided attention. No matter how busy she is, she takes her time to not only “fix the boo boo” but also comforts her students with a smile, hug, or kind word.
