Feel Good Story: Growing Together | Community Engagement Day with Walmart
Walmart Day at TCA

Tomball ISD’s Community Connections program at Tomball Connections Academy proudly celebrated its first Community Engagement Day with Walmart, marking the start of a partnership that brings the classroom into the community and the community into the classroom.

Walmart graciously opened its doors as a jobsite for Community Connections and Life18 students, providing opportunities to work alongside associates and gain meaningful, hands-on experience. Beyond job training, Walmart associates are also volunteering in the district’s Community Connections garden and connecting with students at Tomball High School’s Life18 program—contributions that highlight a shared commitment to supporting students both in employment readiness and in life skills.

Community Engagement Day directly reflects the mission of Tomball ISD’s transition programs: helping students build employability, independence, and strong community relationships.

“Each authentic task students take on—whether it’s completing a job responsibility, problem-solving, or interacting with new people—becomes a stepping stone toward confidence and independence,” said Lesly Haseloff, Community Connections teacher.

While the event focuses on student growth, it also underscores the vital role of community partnerships. Walmart’s values of opportunity and inclusion made them a natural fit as the program’s newest and largest retail partner. By collaborating with schools, businesses like Walmart open doors to employment, mentorship, and practices that help students thrive long after graduation.

This year’s event was just the beginning. Tomball Connections Academy leaders are eager to see Community Engagement Day grow into a tradition, strengthening bonds between students and the businesses that call Tomball home.

In addition to hosting students, Walmart provided a gift card to support the Community Connections garden and donated supplies for Life18 students to prepare trail mix snacks—tangible reminders of their investment in student success.

Tomball ISD extends sincere appreciation to Walmart for stepping forward as a true partner in preparing students for life beyond high school, and for showing how powerful it can be when schools and businesses work together to build opportunities for all.
