GLJHS Student Leaders Model Campus Core Values During Student-Led Character Lessons
Empowering student leaders to advocate, promote, and positively influence their peers continues to grow across Tomball ISD. For Grand Lakes Junior High, a new initiative began this school year that allows its student leaders to have a voice and lead in a powerful way.
Led by CTE teacher, Leslie Wilson, and supported by Principal Dr. Kim McKinney, 34 GLJHS student leaders are creating character and leadership lessons designed for their peers that are implemented during Tiger Den every Friday.
In small groups, these student leaders create character lessons with an activity to be delivered to their assigned Tiger Den classes. The lessons are based on their campus core values with each student leader embodying BE GOLD (Build Confidence, Earn Respect, Grow Together, Operate with Honesty and Integrity, Lead with Accountability, Dedicate Yourself to Excellence).
In addition to core values, the student leaders also address lessons on important topics like mental health and antibullying.
Recently, the student leaders led a lesson on self care and the power of affirmations. Each student made their affirmation plate in Tiger Den and wore them around the rest of the day for other classmates to write affirmations on.
“Character and leadership are two things I’m most passionate about,” said Wilson. “I’m really proud of the work we have done so far. Our student leaders embody and model our campus core values each day, and have truly created a student-led experience that is inspiring and uplifting.”
