A Bench Built for Friendship: Collin’s Gift to Wildwood Elementary

Buddy Bench - Collin at WES

This summer, former Wildwood Elementary student Collin dedicated his time and energy to a project that reflects the very best of student leadership and kindness. Before heading off to his next chapter at the intermediate level, Collin built and donated a Buddy Bench for the school playground—a simple idea with a powerful impact.

Inspired by Experience

Collin’s idea came from his own school journey.

“At my former school in San Antonio, there was a Buddy Bench,” he shared. “When I came to Wildwood Elementary as a new student, I noticed there wasn’t one here. I wanted to change that.”

The memory of how the Buddy Bench helped him as a newcomer guided his decision.

“The Buddy Bench meant that I would meet friends that were like me,” Collin explained. “I made friends that were like me, and I want other kids to have that chance too.”

From Plan to Project

Collin didn’t just dream up the idea—he brought it to life through careful planning and collaboration.

“We wrote out an action plan that included the proposal, draw ups, and materials. I then built it with my grandpa,” he said with pride.

The final product is a welcoming bench that carries an important purpose: no child at Wildwood should ever feel left out or alone.

“I hope that when kids feel lonely on the playground, they can come sit down as a signal to others to ask to join them to play,” Collin said.

Building a Culture of Kindness

Wildwood staff see Collin’s project as more than just a bench.

“We hope the Buddy Bench becomes a daily reminder for students to extend kindness and include others,” said WES Administration. “By offering an easy way for children to signal that they’d like to be included, the bench can help spark friendships, prevent feelings of isolation, and strengthen the sense of belonging in our school community.”

Projects like this, they explained, shape the culture of the campus in powerful ways.

“When students see one of their peers lead with kindness and create something that benefits everyone, it sets the tone for a culture built on respect, empathy, and teamwork,” they shared. “Collin’s thoughtfulness and initiative truly stand out. His leadership goes beyond building the bench—it’s about inspiring his peers to act with kindness and making sure every student feels valued.”

A Legacy of Compassion

For Collin, the meaning of his project comes down to something simple yet profound.

“Kindness is spreading joy and hope to others,” he said.

The Buddy Bench will serve as a lasting reminder that one small act of kindness can create a ripple effect, helping students feel seen, included, and valued. Collin’s gift is more than a bench—it’s a seat for friendship, connection, and belonging at Wildwood Elementary for years to come.
