Tomball ISD Implements New P-TECH for Healthcare within Tomball Star Academy

TOMBALL - With an effort to implement new learning opportunities for students as well as provide high-quality academic choice, Tomball ISD is excited to begin recruitment for Tomball Star Academy. TSA will now consist of two wings; the Early College High School (ECHS) and the Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH) for Healthcare.

The new P-TECH Healthcare pathway opens its doors in August 2023 within Tomball Star Academy. Through an innovative partnership with Lone Star College-Tomball, HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball, and Tomball ISD, current eighth graders, free of charge, will have the opportunity to pursue a pathway in healthcare through a rigorous and supportive learning environment that blends high school and the first two years of college.

Students enrolled in the P-TECH program work toward an associate degree while gaining hands-on work experience in high-demand, high-wage fields. Business and industry partners provide an array of opportunities for students who graduate from the P-TECH program and enter the workforce with proven, in-demand skills sets, making them top candidates in their chosen industry.

Benefits for students interested in the Healthcare P-TECH:

  • Earn HS diploma
  • Earn an Associate of Science degree
  • Healthcare Industry-Based Certifications
  • Level 1 Pre-Professional Certificate
  • Attend college classes and explore healthcare careers
  • Upon graduation, access to first in-line, high priority job interviews with HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball
  • Enjoy student clubs

Is P-TECH for me?

Students who are motivated by in-depth coursework and internships and are open to accepting career-focused academic guidance from dedicated collegiate teachers and professors in both academic and workplace settings but need a no-cost solution to attend college, then P-TECH might be the place for you.

“In Tomball ISD, we are intentional and focused on exploring new opportunities and providing educational options for our students. Our Board of Trustees has been instrumental in supporting our continued partnership with Lone Star College-Tomball and HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball as we implement this new Allied Health P-TECH in Tomball Star Academy. This new opportunity will provide a premier educational experience for our students interested in a seamless path from high school, to post-secondary education, to healthcare employment. These students will be challenged, yet supported in all aspects of their P-TECH journey, and by the end, they will have achieved so much in the time they have spent with us here in Tomball ISD only to continue making a difference in our amazing community.” Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora, Superintendent of Schools, Tomball ISD

“Lone Star College-Tomball, Tomball ISD and HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball partnering to provide the P-TECH option is a perfect example of collective impact. We all want the same thing—for our community to have access to extraordinary education and healthcare. Lone Star College is recognized nationally as a premier community college. Tomball ISD is one of the top rated school districts in the state. HCA Healthcare is also a premier organization. Individually, we are strong. Together, we make an exponentially bigger difference. Students who choose the P-TECH option will have the opportunity to achieve more sooner and advance in a healthcare career quicker.” Dr. Lee Ann Nutt, President, Lone Star College-Tomball

"I am extremely excited and proud to partner with our amazing local educational institutions.  It not only helps with our local students' education but entices their interest in health sciences and creates a pipeline of bright and skilled future healthcare professionals to serve our community!" Robert A. Marmerstein, Chief Executive Officer, HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball

The ECHS will continue its excellence since it opened in 2017. This wing of TSA provides students a “seamless” pathway from high school to college. The program supports students as they gradually integrate into college course work through a traditional high school degree plan plus dual enrollment. Completing the ECHS graduation requirements will ensure students are college-ready and able to successfully transition to a post secondary college/university as well as transition directly into the workforce.

Benefits for students interested in the ECHS:

  • Earn HS diploma
  • Earn an Associate of Arts or Science degree
  • Smaller learning community
  • 1:1 ratio technology environment
  • Attend college classes and explore careers
  • Enjoy student clubs

Is ECHS for me?

If you are a student focused on academics within a smaller learning community and are planning on graduating from high school with your associate degree, while saving time and money in pursuit of your bachelor’s degree, and are interested in clubs related to engineering, robotics, and fine arts, then ECHS might be the place for you.

Tomball ISD is proud to partner with Lone Star College-Tomball.

All current eighth grade students (Class of 2027) are encouraged and eligible to apply to ECHS or P-TECH.

Applications will open on October 24, 2022 and close on December 9, 2022. Parent Information Nights will be held November 10, 2022 or December 1, 2022 at LSC-Tomball. Lottery for P-TECH will be December 12, 2022 and for ECHS on January 9, 2023.

Tomball ISD educates students to become responsible, productive citizens by providing innovative, individually rigorous, and personally valuable educational experiences. Founded in 1908, Tomball ISD now encompasses 83 square miles in northwest Harris County and southwest Montgomery County, and is located approximately 30 miles from downtown Houston. The district currently educates nearly 22,000 students at 22 campuses.

Lone Star College-Tomball, the third of the seven Lone Star Colleges, was the result of many years of dedication by community members to bring higher education to the Tomball and Magnolia communities. Residents of the Tomball Independent School District (TISD) voted in 1982 to join Lone Star College and LSC-Tomball opened its doors for students in 1988. Today, LSC-Tomball serves thousands of students via three locations, LSC-Tomball main campus, the LSC-Tomball Health Science Building and LSC-Creekside Center, an LSC-Tomball satellite center located in the Creekside area of The Woodlands.

HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball, the 150-acre campus in Tomball, Texas, has provided quality healthcare to Tomball, Magnolia, and Northwest Houston communities since 1948. HCA Houston Tomball is proudly part of Houston’s largest healthcare system, HCA Houston Healthcare, and is dedicated to providing exceptional care, above all else.
