Tomball ISD Celebrates Academic Growth, Indicating Full Recovery

TOMBALL - As 2022 Spring State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR)  results roll in, Tomball ISD began celebrating its academic growth and learning recovery, despite substantial obstacles faced since 2019.

Tomball ISD’s STAAR results (Grades 3-8) lead all surrounding districts across the board in all performance levels and in all subjects, and remain extremely competitive in comparison to similar districts across the state.

Despite challenges faced statewide, Tomball ISD has restored learning loss in many many areas since 2019 including Reading (Grades 3-8), Social Studies (Grade 8), English II, Biology and U.S. History.

"I am a very proud Superintendent for many reasons but to consider the challenges we have faced in education since 2019, our 2022 STAAR results (Grades 3-8) are exceptionally strong,” Tomball ISD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora said. “Not only do we lead all surrounding districts across the board in all performance levels and in all subjects, we also remain extremely competitive in comparison to similar districts across the state. These results demonstrate positive growth as well as validate the hard work put forth by our dedicated teachers and students this past year."

High academic expectations drive academic performance at all levels.  This level of rigor has resulted in a seventeen percentage point increase at the “Masters” level in Reading (Grades 3 - 8), which is the STAAR’s highest performance level.  Double digit increases at the “Masters” performance level is a testament to the hard work of every teacher and campus leader.

While academic achievement levels in Tomball ISD remain high, four out of five students also demonstrated robust academic growth in comparison to the previous year.  Academic growth overtime is a strong indicator of learning recovery.  Furthermore, Tomball ISD’s Emerging Bilingual students grew at least one level in English Language Proficiency during the 2021-2022 school year alone.

"I want to make sure we take time to celebrate our academic growth and learning recovery considering the external challenges faced in recent years,” Salazar-Zamora said.  “I once again want to commend our teachers for investing in their professional growth to ensure high-levels of learning as well as commend our students and families for their continued pursuit of excellence in all areas. Because of this commitment, we are not just a district, but a destination.”

Along with producing academic achievement combined with overcoming challenges related to COVID, Tomball ISD has also continued to experience significant growth as a fast-growth school district all while maintaining high levels of learning, strong finances and seeking out ways to provide more educational opportunities for all students through the passing of Bond 2021.

“We are very appreciative of our amazing community, led by our School Board, who truly supports learning and growing,” Salazar-Zamora said. When we are faced with challenges or seek new opportunities in Tomball ISD, our Board of Trustees always keeps the interests of our students and staff at the forefront. While we may be growing fast, our community continues to understand the value of public education and supports our decisions as a high-performing school district and for that, we are very thankful.”
