TOMBALL - As the 2022-2023 academic school year approaches, over 400 TISD staff members returned from summer break and attended the in-district Great Expectations (GE) Summer Institute with a focus on achieving excellence in learning and living.

Staff and teachers from every GE school in Tomball ISD are represented at the week-long professional development training program, hosted by the organization at Creekside Park Junior High.

“We are thrilled to kick off the 2022 GE Summer Institute in TISD and value the commitment our staff members have shown toward Great Expectations since 2015,” said Dr. Lee Wright, TISD Assistant Superintendent of Strategic Innovation. “It is a special privilege hosting a major four-day institute like this which equips every participant with skills to nurture a culture of respect and promote academic excellence across every elementary and intermediate campus."

All 11 Tomball ISD elementary schools and all three intermediate schools have adopted the Great Expectations model, which enables character building while developing a learning climate geared towards the entire academic environment.

Of the 14 current GE schools, 11 (CES, CFES, CPES, DPES, GOES, LES, OIS, TCES, TES, WCES, WES) are Model GE Schools, meaning that based on an evaluation from GE Instructors, 90% of the staff members are implementing 100% of the GE practices. This past year alone, three more schools, Timber Creek Elementary, Creekside Forest Elementary and Grand Oaks Elementary received Model School status.

GE instructors, teachers and educators from around the country have brought a fresh learning approach for Tomball ISD and principals to grow and learn. Each of these GE campuses joined their new staff in the classrooms, participating in a variety of character-building exercises and new approaches to high-quality instruction.

The Great Expectations summer training helps guide and teach a model that is instrumental in developing and promoting self-esteem, attendance, discipline and parent participation which ultimately improves the entire academic experience for the student and educator.

Words from Tomball ISD educators about Great Expectations® (GE)

“It has been a great week to reaffirm and reenergize us in getting us ready for this next school year. GE is the best program to use with our kids which enables us to establish a culture of respect, develop high vocabulary with our kids and practice critical thinking.”

Nathan Henze, NIS (2nd year with GE)

“I love implementing GE into my classroom because it gives my students a sense of community and ownership. Through GE, they are provided an opportunity to learn life skills that they can carry with them for the rest of their life. GE is amazing because it allows me as a teacher to see how my students grow in their skills from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. At the beginning of the year, they may not know what the word means but by the end of the year, they are using the word on their own, encouraging classmates with those words and giving each other shoutouts … “I think ____ is being respectful by doing _____.” It is just so amazing to see them incorporating GE into their friendships and how they interact with adults.”

Bailey Andrews, GOES (3rd year with GE)

“I first learned about GE being a parent in this district. My children grew up learning the Life Principles and one day my daughter and I were out in the community and she recognized someone displaying integrity and she immediately said “mom, that was integrity.” She was able to then explain to me what it meant. For her to be able to spot it, recognize it and understand it, I was so impressed. This week has been a wonderful and exciting and even encouraging experience. Great Expectations encompasses so much and really creates a culture of positivity and intentionality with teaching.”

Amber Blake, OIS (1st year with GE)

From GreatExpectations.org

Great Expectations® (GE) is a professional development program that provides teachers and administrators with the skills needed to create harmony and excitement within the school atmosphere, elements that are basic for inspiring students to pursue academic excellence. With a focus on the human quality of teaching and learning, GE provides renewal and inspiration for teachers who may have lost their way and forgotten why they became teachers in the beginning.

Great Expectations is an Oklahoma-based program, founded in 1991 by retired financial planner Charlier Hollar, that was envisioned as a foundational program dedicated to developing a teacher training model.
