314 Tomball ISD Students Recognized as Scholastic Writing Competition Winners

TOMBALL - 314 Tomball ISD students were recognized for their writing skills during the Regional Scholastic Writing Competition, hosted by the Harris County Department of Education.

Students compose a piece of writing that is then judged by a panel of professionals for quality and original ideas. Awards are given in three categories: Golden Key Winners (who proceed to the National level), Silver Key Winners and Honorable Mentions. 

Tomball ISD doubled the number of submissions to 581 and of those, 54% of those submissions, represented by 314 students, were selected among a winning category.

Of the 314 winners, 43 received Golden Keys and will move on to the National Competition, which is judged in late March. All Gold and Silver Key Winners will be recognized by the Harris County Department of Education next month. 

“I am excited to see the efforts of both our teachers and students paying off with these victories,” Dr. Ashley Schlafly, Director of Secondary ELA and Advanced Academics said. “It is a testament to the amazing writing instruction being provided by our TISD ELA teachers, as well as the creativity and hard work of our students who translate their lessons into such amazing and original writing pieces.”

• Golden Key National Qualifiers: 1
• Silver Key Winners: 4
• Honorable Mention: 3

Creekside Park Junior High: 

• Total Winners: 97
• Golden Key National Qualifiers: 24
• Silver Key Winners: 30
• Honorable Mention: 43

Grand Lakes Junior High: 

• Total Winners: 8
• Golden Key National Qualifiers: 1
• Silver Key Winners: 2
• Honorable Mention: 5
