Tomball Intermediate Students Flourish in MakerSpace Mentor Program

MakerSpace at TIS

Tomball Intermediate School has created a space where students can flourish, learn, grow, and problem solve all while building connections with mentors. Through its newest MakerSpace Mentor Program, TIS welcomes campus and district staff members to join in on an opportunity to connect with students.

MakerSpace is a designated area in the library with a variety of STEM materials that students can use to create, build, and explore. This specific mentor program stems from a previous partnership between TIS and Tomball Star Academy. NHS students from TSA served as mentors to TIS fifth graders and enjoyed utilizing MakerSpace activities to build relationships.

With so much success, TIS wanted to continue growing its mentor program. Thanks to a generous donation from the Woodtrace Foundation and the TIS PTO, funds were used to expand the MakerSpace resources and create a welcoming area for mentors and mentees to meet more often.

TIS mentees have expressed their excitement for being a part of this program. In fact, TIS Administration is constantly being stopped in the hallways and asked, “When are our mentors coming back?” It has grown into a community effort and students are flourishing with the support of everyone involved. In all, the new MakerSpace Mentor Program at TIS has truly made an immediate impact on those involved, helping students build confidence, resiliency, and problem-solving skills all in a safe environment.
