Smart Snack Guidelines for Campus Admin

Starting in school year 2014-15, all foods sold at school during the school day need to meet these new national nutrition standards. The Smart Snacks in School regulation applies to foods sold a la carte, in the school store, cafeteria, and vending machines. This is nationwide for all public schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program.

Purchasing Restrictions
Purchasing restrictions on Smart Snack/a la carte items can be made using School Cafe. See instructions attached for demonstration.
*Please note, restrictions are not for food allergy information. Food Allergy information must be submitted to the school nurse and the Child Nutrition Registered Dietitian, Kevin White, 281-357-3170 ext. 6214.
 

Required

As part of Tomball ISD’s Wellness Plan for foods sold, the District will comply with federal requirements for reimbursable meals. For other foods and beverages sold to students during the school day, (midnight until 30 minutes past the last bell) the District will comply with the federal requirements for competitive foods. Competitive foods and beverages are not part of the regular meal programs and occur through sales such as a la carte options or vending machines. For purposes of this plan, these requirements will be referred to as “Smart Snacks” standards or requirements.

State rules adopted by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) allow an exemption to the Smart Snacks requirements for up to six days per year per campus when a food or beverage is sold as part of a District fundraiser. [See CO(LEGAL)] Campus principals will submit exemption dates and activities to the Director of Child Nutrition at least one week prior to the activity date for review.
